The Benefits of Translating Your Website into Russian, English, and Other Languages

Translating your website into multiple languages is a significant investment, but it can also be very rewarding. It can help you reach a wider audience, improve your search engine optimization (SEO), and strengthen your brand.

Reach a Wider Audience

Translating your website into Russian and English can help you reach a global audience. This means that you can connect with new potential customers and partners, and increase your sales.

The Different Aspects of Website Translation

A website is composed of two parts; a technical aspect describing the products and services, with a commercial aspect describing the relevance of your offers, and a second part detailing your prices with the terms of the offers and the general terms of sale. Translating a website is not as easy as it might seem, hence the need to consult a professional translator who has the necessary legal and technical knowledge. Every translation requires specific research for each topic to be translated.

Examples:

A French cosmetics company saw its sales increase by 20% after translating its website into English.

A Russian travel agency was able to expand its operations into Europe after translating its website into multiple languages.

Pricing

The cost depending on several factors, including:

The number of languages into which the website must be translated

The volume of text to be translated

The complexity of the content to be translated

The turnaround time

In general, the cost of translating a website ranges from €300 to €1,000 per language

Improve Your SEO

Translating your website can also help you improve your SEO. This is because search engines favor websites that are available in multiple languages.

Examples:

A French tourism website that was translated into English saw its ranking in Google search results increase by 50%.

A Chinese technology company that translated its website into Spanish saw its organic traffic increase by 30%.

Strengthen Your Brand

By translating your website into the language of your target audience, you are showing them that you care about their needs and that you are open to doing business internationally. This can help strengthen your brand and position you as a leader in your industry.

Examples:

An Italian clothing company saw its reputation improve in Europe after translating its website into English.

An American university was able to attract more international students after translating its website into multiple languages.

Conclusion:

Translating your website is a major decision, but it can be very beneficial for your business. If you are considering expanding internationally, is a great way to start.

Artificial Intelligence vs. Interpreters/Translators

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been the proverbial sword of Damocles hanging over the translation profession since the mid-20th century, marked by early experiments with automatic translation systems initiated during the Cold War.

Since then, approximately every 5-10 years, the translation profession has been regularly sentenced to imminent death. Thus, translators have been struggling like gladiators in the arena of ancient Rome, awaiting a verdict from the emperor and the audience, determined by a simple thumbs-up or thumbs-down gesture.

Having specialized mainly in consecutive interpretation over the last decade, it seemed to me that discussions and debates on whether new technologies would replace translators were primarily focused on written translation.

Beyond Technology: Why the Future of Human Interpretation Remains Robust Despite AI Advances?

I am often asked if I worry that new technologies, enabling written and oral translations, will render my profession obsolete.

Indeed, nowadays, these technologies are becoming increasingly proficient in translating technical, legal, or other texts where terminology and phrases are repetitive and fairly standard. There are also technologies capable, with a few clicks, of speaking most languages worldwide.

However, no, I am not worried at all, and new technologies do not frighten me. Here’s why:

Firstly, the goal of interpretation is much broader than merely transmitting an orally produced message from one language into the words of another. The ultimate goal of interpretation is to ensure effective communication when interlocutors understand each other well and achieve their goals.

The message conveyed directly by words represents only a part of communication, its formal content. Although new technologies are competent enough to handle this part, they are not yet equipped with certain qualities to compete with a human in situations requiring interpretation.

The Complexity of Communication: The Crucial Importance of Non-Verbal Communication and Context for Quality Interpretation

During oral communication, much more is conveyed through nonverbal than verbal communication. A lot also depends on the context, defined as “the situation within which something exists or happens, and that can help explain it” (Cambridge Dictionary).

The meaning of a sentence results from the combination of verbal and non-verbal communication as well as the context. The same sentence, “Would you mind taking out the trash?” can have different meanings depending on the context and non-verbal elements.

Delivered with an aimable intonation and in the context of a good relationship between interlocutors, it can mean: “I would be very grateful if you helped me take out the trash.” On the other hand, a frustrated tone in the context of a bad relationship between interlocutors can change the meaning to: “I’ve told you several times to take out the trash; I’m fed up with having to remind you every time.”

Language and Culture: AI Cannot Yet Overcome Cultural Challenges for Performing Flawless Interpretation

Language is one of the elements that constitute the peculiarities of each nation’s culture. People speaking different languages often have different cultural codes: the same gesture does not have the same meaning for nationals of different countries.

A classic example: the thumbs-up gesture has positive meanings, indicating approval in the United States, but very negative meanings in some South American countries. Thus, when a U.S. president used this gesture during a visit to South America, a diplomatic conflict was narrowly avoided.

The culture of each country is not limited to gestures but encompasses several other aspects that can play a key role in understanding and interpreting the message expressed by words. Grasping and deciphering non-verbal messages as well as the context accompanying a verbal message are integral to the interpreter’s work. Artificial intelligence is not yet capable of performing this task.

Conclusion

In one of the articles on artificial intelligence that I’ve read recently, I’ve appreciated the following phrase: “Will people in certain professions soon be replaced by new technologies? No, these people will rather be replaced by others who master these technologies.” For me, artificial intelligence does not eliminate the interpreter’s profession but rather transforms it. Artificial intelligence also has the potential to become a tool that allows interpreters to progress professionally more quickly.

AI’s Impact on UN Translators: The Transformative Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Translator Profession at the United Nations

AI’s Impact on UN Translators – The United Nations, renowned for its linguistic diversity, is at the forefront of adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the field of translation. This technological revolution has significant repercussions for translators and interpreters, particularly those specializing in Russian and English.

Advancements in AI Redefining the Role of Translators at the UN

A Synergistic Collaboration

The UN has incorporated cutting-edge technologies, enabling translators to collaborate synergistically with AI systems. This collaboration aims to enhance the accuracy, speed, and efficiency of translations, opening new perspectives for multilingual communication.

Necessary Adaptation

However, this transformation is not without challenges. Translators face the need to adapt their skills to the requirements of AI while preserving the inherent human and cultural essence of their profession.

The Delicate Balance between Technology and Human Expertise

AI’s Impact on UN Translators: The Power of AI in Machine Translation

AI-powered machine translation tools have significantly reduced the time needed to process vast volumes of documents. However, the importance of human expertise remains undeniable to ensure the accuracy and relevance of translations, especially in the complex context of the UN.

The Need for Bilingual Russian-English Translator-Interpreters

Russian and English are key languages at the UN, and translators-interpreters specializing in these languages play a crucial role. Their ability to navigate between these two linguistic worlds remains irreplaceable, even with the advent of AI.

Conclusion

Today, on September 30th, translators worldwide celebrate their professional day – International Translation Day.

Happy holiday, dear colleagues!

Translator Interpreter :

A Profession Fit for Queens and Princesses

I don’t want to sound excessively feminist, but this article will primarily focus on women, women-translators, or more specifically, women-translators from royal families…

Translator Interpreter – A Profession Fit for Queens and Princesses

The profession of a translator was highly respected in its early days. Napoleon Bonaparte once said, “A soldier who speaks two languages is worth twice as much.” However, over time, in the 20th century, with globalization and the intense development of new technologies facilitating faster and easier automatic translations, the translator’s profession is sometimes underestimated and even compared to that of a secretary. Nonetheless, the translator responds to various needs and professions worldwide.

Queen: Translator-Interpreter

Alexandra Pavlovna interpreter

So, a brief journey into the history of the profession will undoubtedly delight my female colleagues. If we look closely, we will discover that many women from European royal families were more or less in this profession, or rather, it was a profession that came naturally to them. Why? In one word, a key aspect of the education of girls from noble and royal families at the time was mastering multiple languages. Because back then, marriage was a strong and effective means to form a political alliance or improve the financial or social status of a family. You never knew in which country a girl might end up, given that political strategies changed constantly. Therefore, these girls had to be ready to speak the language of their future husband’s country – either by already mastering that language or by quickly learning it. In the end, all princesses often spoke the most important European languages and had the ability to adapt quickly to a new linguistic environment. More than that, languages were often their pleasure and pastime. For example, one of the daughters of Emperor Paul I of Russia, Alexandra Pavlovna, a future Archduchess of Austria, published two French translations in a Russian magazine called “Muse” at the age of 13.

The love of queens and princesses for languages and their mastery even had quite significant political consequences. Empress Elizabeth, better known by the nickname “Sissi,” adored the Hungarian language, which she learned despite it being one of the most complicated European languages. Her knowledge of Hungarian helped her better understand the mentality of the Hungarians and fall even more in love with the country. So, it was not a mere coincidence, and Sissi influenced her husband, Franz Joseph, to grant certain freedoms to the Hungarian people, giving birth to the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy and marking a political compromise between the two countries – Austria and Hungary.

In Sweden, the king’s love for a woman from the world of languages and translation led to changes in the laws of the country and the matrimonial tradition of several centuries. Queen Silvia of Sweden is a certified interpreter and speaks six languages. It was because of her that one of the laws was modified – because before, the kings of Sweden were not allowed to marry women who were not of royal origin. Silvia Sommerlath was not, however, she had worked for the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, as the chief of protocol, and that’s where she met her future fiancé and the love of her life, Crown Prince Gustave-Adolphe.

These are just a few examples of women from royal families who practiced the profession of translator, either as enthusiasts or professionals.

But after all, what does it mean to “be a queen”? Perhaps it means having possibilities and power that others do not have. Mastery of a language is undoubtedly the power to influence people’s decisions by providing them with new information from a source in another language. It is also the power to organize communication, dialogue among representatives of different nations. So, dear colleagues, let’s be proud of our profession, let’s be “queens”!

Maximize the impact of your communication at trade fairs and conferences with an interpreter.

Interpreting at a professional trade fair or conference is an essential and complex service. A conference interpreter must juggle various formats, whether it’s during booth visits, negotiations, presentations, interviews, or cultural programs. The costs associated with participating in renowned conferences are significant, prompting executives to question the need to invest in interpreter services. The answer is clear: an interpreter can genuinely maximize these costs by significantly improving communication with your counterparts.

During such events, the primary goal is to present your products and services in the best possible way and establish new partnerships. Effective communication between you and your counterparts is crucial. The initial meeting with a potential partner can determine the success of your future business relationships. A professional interpreter can play a vital role in facilitating smooth and mutually enriching communication.

Furthermore, at many trade fairs, having an interpreter working with your company is often free, unlike the participation of other specialists from the company.

Conference Interpreting

If you are considering using interpretation services at a professional trade fair or conference, here are some tips for choosing the right interpreter:

Professional and personal qualities sought:

Proficiency in two foreign languages, including the language of the country hosting the fair/conference and English.

In-depth knowledge of the specific terminology in the field of the fair/conference.

Genuine interest in your company and the ability to prepare accordingly.

Adaptability to non-ideal conditions, such as the ambient noise of fairs and conferences.

Ability to quickly adapt to interlocutors, including those with specific accents.

Effective stress management, crucial during unpredictable events.

Physical endurance for intense and busy days.

Organizational skills and experience as a personal assistant.

Serenity and politeness in all circumstances.

Neat presentation, as the interpreter represents your company professionally.

In-depth knowledge of the local culture.

Larina Translation’s interpreters frequently participate in professional trade fairs in Cannes (MIPIM, MIPTV, MIDEM, Cannes Yachting Festival, Tax Free, MIPCOM, MAPIC), as well as in Grasse (Congress of Niche Perfumery) and Nice. We are committed to supporting your specialists, ensuring the success of their business trip in the South of France for the benefit of your company.

Happy Easter – Anecdote

During an international conference on religious diversity, an interpreter had a little misunderstanding while interpreting a speech on the celebration of Easter in different cultures.

The speaker had started by explaining that in the Christian culture, Easter commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ three days after his crucifixion. However, the interpreter interpreted the word “resurrection” as “reincarnation”, which had the effect of confusing the conference participants, especially those who practiced religions that do not believe in reincarnation.

The speaker quickly realized the misunderstanding and tried to correct the error by explaining that in Christian culture, resurrection is different from reincarnation. Fortunately, the incident was quickly resolved thanks to the speaker’s clarification, but it still elicited some smiles and reflections on the difficulty of interpretation when it comes to delicate religious concepts.

Here’s another one from another international conference on religions, where an interpreter was tasked with translating the words of a Catholic priest discussing the meaning of Easter in the Christian religion.

The priest explained that the resurrection of Jesus Christ at Easter was a symbol of eternal life, and that in celebrating this feast, Christians commemorate his death and resurrection.

The interpreter, believing that he had understood correctly, translated these words by saying that Easter was a feast where Christians celebrated the death of Jesus. The people present, especially those belonging to other religions, were shocked by this interpretation and began to wonder why Christians celebrated the death of their messiah.

The priest, realizing the translation error, immediately corrected the misunderstanding by explaining that the celebration of Easter was actually a feast of resurrection and not of the death of Jesus.

This example illustrates the importance of accurate translation, especially when it comes to sensitive and symbolic subjects. Translation errors can not only lead to misunderstandings, but also offend and create tensions between people belonging to different religions or cultures.

Larina Translation wishes you a Happy Easter!

As a professional translation agency, Larina Translation is constantly looking for new technologies and tools to improve the quality and speed of its services. The question they ask themselves is: AI or a human interpreter? One of the most exciting and promising technologies in this field is artificial intelligence (AI) CHAT GPT. Using advanced language models and algorithms, AI can help translators work faster and more efficiently while providing more accurate and consistent translations.

AI or a human interpreter ?

AI has revolutionized many industries, including language. Interpreters, who translate conversations in real time, are professionals who are also facing the impact of AI on their profession. AI has the ability to analyze large amounts of data and provide instant translations with a high level of accuracy. This technology has significantly improved the speed and quality of translations and is already used in many contexts, including on online translation platforms.

However, this technology is not yet capable of completely replacing human interpreters. Interpreters play a crucial role in contexts where translation needs to be done with great accuracy and in complex situations, such as international conferences or business negotiations. Human interpreters can understand the nuances of language and idiomatic expressions, as well as the cultural and social contexts that influence conversations. Moreover, interpreters are often versatile professionals capable of translating in multiple languages and in different fields. The linguistic skills and specialized knowledge of interpreters allow them to provide a more accurate and complete translation than what AI can currently offer.

However, can AI be a useful tool for interpreters, allowing them to work more efficiently and faster? Interpreters can use voice recognition software to transcribe conversations quickly, allowing them to focus on translation. Real-time translation technologies can also help interpreters quickly understand the topics discussed during a conversation, which can enable them to provide a more accurate and faster translation.

In summary, the impact of AI on the profession of interpreters is significant but complex. While AI can provide fast and accurate translations, it cannot completely replace human interpreters who possess linguistic skills and specialized knowledge that AI does not yet have. Interpreters can, however, take advantage of AI to improve their work and provide more efficient and faster translation services.

Feel free to comment on this article and let us know what you think about AI and Chat GPT.

Simultaneous interpreters during international meetings.

Good relationships sometimes depend on small things. The level and quality of simultaneous interpreters’ work can influence the exchanges between world leaders in a positive or negative way, with serious consequences.

President Macron and President Putin during the meeting at Fort de Brégançon.

The recent example of the meeting between Vladimir Putin and Emmanuel Macron on August 19, 2019, at Brégançon, illustrates this point. The work of the group of simultaneous interpreters for French media journalists was significantly different from that done by RT France (Russian media) interpreters, an incident noticed by many viewers and Internet users. Fortunately, in this case, the differences in interpretation did not have serious consequences for a good geopolitical relationship. However, some cases can end with very negative consequences.

Article to read: Lost in translation: what did Vladimir Putin really say about the Yellow Vests in Brégançon?

Historically, there have been several cases in our history where simultaneous interpreters and translators have changed the course of events.

L’exemple le plus tragique est malheureusement celui-ci :

The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki could have been avoided, due to a translation error that could have been prevented, following the interpretation of the Japanese term “Mokusatsu” which was translated as “ignore with contempt” but was interpreted in the wrong context. This led to the largest massacre of the 20th century, with the United States dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The reality was simply a confusion and haste of journalists who misinterpreted Kantaro Suzuki’s use of the term “Mokusatsu” to mean “ignore with contempt” instead of “no comment for now,” a term with a double meaning that could be interpreted as “contempt.” We know the rest of the story. Can we say that a reflection should be made regarding the professionalism of interpreters and especially not to mix two professions into one! Journalist and interpreter are not the same profession.

Other examples exist, with less severe consequences in terms of loss of human lives, but still have an impact.

Confusion during the Sudanese referendum in February 2010.

Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary-General of the United Nations,

was reported by AFP as saying “We will work hard to avoid possible secession.” In reality, Ban Ki-moon had told journalists that he was in favor of a unified Sudan, stating, “We will try to work hard to make this unity attractive.” The result was a major incident in Sudan that took some time to dissipate.

The abandonment of Jimmy Carter by the United States?

In 1977, Jimmy Carter, the President of the United States, visited Poland with a Russian interpreter who spoke Polish but lacked professional training in the language! President Carter allegedly claimed that he had “abandoned” the United States for Poland. In reality, he was simply referring to the “aspirations for the future” of the Polish people.

Fortunately, in this particular case, the most serious consequence was the premature departure of the interpreter and some joking by the Poles.

The infamous “We will bury you”

Another approximate translation during the Cold War. In 1956, the Prime Minister of the Soviet Union, Nikita Khrushchev, had an expression distorted: It should have been “we will outlast you” or “we will defeat you,” which is the correct translation, but it turned into “we will bury you”… It must be admitted that, given the context, this could quickly escalate. Once again, the responsibility of the interpreter was heavily involved.

Many other cases exist, and the question arises when technology thinks it can replace the interpreter. Is this a good idea given the responsibilities involved and the possible consequences?

An Italian expression perfectly illustrates the subject “Traduttore, traditore,” which literally means “translator, traitor” and proves that in international politics, the exercise is really delicate and even dangerous.

In conclusion, it is up to you to decide whether the interpreter is a traitor or not!
