Interpreters and War Translators: Essential Actors in International Conflicts

In an increasingly tense international context, marked by conflicts such as Ukraine-Russia and Israel-Gaza, armed conflicts are on the rise. These conflicts often involve actors of different nationalities, necessitating the presence of interpreters and translators. These professionals play a crucial role, both for journalists and for the military.

The Role of Interpreters and Translators for Journalists

Journalists are often the first to visit conflict zones. They require interpreters and translators to communicate with local populations and gather information. Interpreters and translators enable journalists to understand the complexities of the conflict and convey the testimonies of victims.

Historical Example:

During the Vietnam War, French journalist Catherine Leroy was the first to film the fall of Saigon. She was able to do so with the assistance of a Vietnamese interpreter, who facilitated communication with North Vietnamese soldiers.

Practical Roles:

Interpreters and translators can assist journalists in:

Interviewing individuals in different languages

Writing articles and reports

Translating official documents

Translating political speeches

The Role of Interpreters and Translators for the Military

Military personnel also interact with populations speaking different languages. Interpreters and translators enable them to communicate with local populations, negotiate ceasefires, and conduct military operations.

Historical Example:

During the Gulf War, interpreters and translators played a crucial role for U.S. forces. They allowed soldiers to communicate with local populations and gather information about the enemy.

Practical Roles:

Interpreters and translators can assist the military in:

Conducting intelligence operations

Performing patrols

Interrogating prisoners

Negotiating ceasefires

Risks Faced by Interpreters and Translators

The work of interpreters and translators in armed conflicts is often dangerous. They may be targeted by armed groups or hostile populations. They may also be exposed to challenging working conditions, including violence and poverty.

Historical Example:

During the Iraq War, many interpreters were murdered by armed groups, as they were considered collaborators with U.S. forces.

Practical Risks:

The risks faced by interpreters and translators in armed conflicts include:

Hostage-taking

Torture

Assassination

Exposure to violence

Exposure to poverty

For those interested in the profession of war interpreters, I recommend the film “The Covenant” by Guy Ritchie, released in 2023. This film poignantly illustrates the many dangers that war interpreters can face.

Based on real events, the film recounts the story of interpreters who assisted the U.S. military in Afghanistan in 2018. It provides a gripping insight into the challenges these professionals face while emphasizing the human and humanitarian aspect of their commitment.

A recommended film for its authentic and emotional portrayal of interpreters’ lives in a conflict context. “The Covenant” offers a unique perspective on their crucial role and the trials they endure, thereby raising awareness about the often overlooked reality of this profession.

Interpreters and translators are indispensable actors in international conflicts, playing a crucial role for both journalists and the military. Their work is often perilous, yet essential for facilitating communication and understanding among the various stakeholders in conflicts.

This text has been enhanced by incorporating practical facts into each section. These practical facts provide additional insights into the role of interpreters and translators in international conflicts. They also highlight the risks faced by these professionals in such challenging contexts.

Here are some specific examples of the practical facts added:

In the section on the role of interpreters and translators for journalists, concrete examples of tasks these professionals may perform are provided.

In the section on the role of interpreters and translators for the military, specific examples of military operations in which these professionals may be involved are given.

Today, on September 30th, translators worldwide celebrate their professional day – International Translation Day.

Happy holiday, dear colleagues!

Translator Interpreter :

A Profession Fit for Queens and Princesses

I don’t want to sound excessively feminist, but this article will primarily focus on women, women-translators, or more specifically, women-translators from royal families…

Translator Interpreter – A Profession Fit for Queens and Princesses

The profession of a translator was highly respected in its early days. Napoleon Bonaparte once said, “A soldier who speaks two languages is worth twice as much.” However, over time, in the 20th century, with globalization and the intense development of new technologies facilitating faster and easier automatic translations, the translator’s profession is sometimes underestimated and even compared to that of a secretary. Nonetheless, the translator responds to various needs and professions worldwide.

Queen: Translator-Interpreter

Alexandra Pavlovna interpreter

So, a brief journey into the history of the profession will undoubtedly delight my female colleagues. If we look closely, we will discover that many women from European royal families were more or less in this profession, or rather, it was a profession that came naturally to them. Why? In one word, a key aspect of the education of girls from noble and royal families at the time was mastering multiple languages. Because back then, marriage was a strong and effective means to form a political alliance or improve the financial or social status of a family. You never knew in which country a girl might end up, given that political strategies changed constantly. Therefore, these girls had to be ready to speak the language of their future husband’s country – either by already mastering that language or by quickly learning it. In the end, all princesses often spoke the most important European languages and had the ability to adapt quickly to a new linguistic environment. More than that, languages were often their pleasure and pastime. For example, one of the daughters of Emperor Paul I of Russia, Alexandra Pavlovna, a future Archduchess of Austria, published two French translations in a Russian magazine called “Muse” at the age of 13.

The love of queens and princesses for languages and their mastery even had quite significant political consequences. Empress Elizabeth, better known by the nickname “Sissi,” adored the Hungarian language, which she learned despite it being one of the most complicated European languages. Her knowledge of Hungarian helped her better understand the mentality of the Hungarians and fall even more in love with the country. So, it was not a mere coincidence, and Sissi influenced her husband, Franz Joseph, to grant certain freedoms to the Hungarian people, giving birth to the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy and marking a political compromise between the two countries – Austria and Hungary.

In Sweden, the king’s love for a woman from the world of languages and translation led to changes in the laws of the country and the matrimonial tradition of several centuries. Queen Silvia of Sweden is a certified interpreter and speaks six languages. It was because of her that one of the laws was modified – because before, the kings of Sweden were not allowed to marry women who were not of royal origin. Silvia Sommerlath was not, however, she had worked for the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, as the chief of protocol, and that’s where she met her future fiancé and the love of her life, Crown Prince Gustave-Adolphe.

These are just a few examples of women from royal families who practiced the profession of translator, either as enthusiasts or professionals.

But after all, what does it mean to “be a queen”? Perhaps it means having possibilities and power that others do not have. Mastery of a language is undoubtedly the power to influence people’s decisions by providing them with new information from a source in another language. It is also the power to organize communication, dialogue among representatives of different nations. So, dear colleagues, let’s be proud of our profession, let’s be “queens”!

The French Riviera currently welcomes over 200,000 Russian tourists annually, boasting more than 6,000 property owners and a community of 20,000 Russians residing between Monaco, Menton, and Théoule-sur-Mer. Their dynamic presence significantly contributes to the French economy, particularly in key sectors like hospitality, dining, and tourism, which form the region’s most crucial economic pillars.

In this flourishing scenario, the need for accessible information in Russian for your business becomes a major asset. Adapting your materials, such as menus, websites, advertising, and legal and commercial texts into Russian, becomes a strategic means of attracting a broader clientele and catering to the needs of this influential audience. Our translation agency based in Monaco and Nice stands by your side, offering personalized services throughout your projects, tailored to your business.

Whether it’s translating real estate documents, facilitating import-export between the two countries, or participating in conferences and trade shows, our experienced team ensures unparalleled support. The goal is to open doors to potential clients and partners in Russia, facilitating communication and creating development opportunities for your business.

The article emphasizes the importance of a common language in strengthening relations and commerce, highlighting that Russians are an integral part of life on the French Riviera. In 2018, the Business Club France Russia was inaugurated in the Alpes-Maritimes with palpable enthusiasm, aiming to foster Franco-Russian relations. The club’s dynamism has already been felt, with a delegation of entrepreneurs visiting Moscow in June 2019 to meet with established French counterparts and stimulate exchanges between the two countries. Originating in Nice, the club plans to open an office in Paris soon and increase visits to Moscow, reinforcing its role as a catalyst for fruitful exchanges between France and Russia.
