Interpreters and War Translators: Essential Actors in International Conflicts

In an increasingly tense international context, marked by conflicts such as Ukraine-Russia and Israel-Gaza, armed conflicts are on the rise. These conflicts often involve actors of different nationalities, necessitating the presence of interpreters and translators. These professionals play a crucial role, both for journalists and for the military.

The Role of Interpreters and Translators for Journalists

Journalists are often the first to visit conflict zones. They require interpreters and translators to communicate with local populations and gather information. Interpreters and translators enable journalists to understand the complexities of the conflict and convey the testimonies of victims.

Historical Example:

During the Vietnam War, French journalist Catherine Leroy was the first to film the fall of Saigon. She was able to do so with the assistance of a Vietnamese interpreter, who facilitated communication with North Vietnamese soldiers.

Practical Roles:

Interpreters and translators can assist journalists in:

Interviewing individuals in different languages

Writing articles and reports

Translating official documents

Translating political speeches

The Role of Interpreters and Translators for the Military

Military personnel also interact with populations speaking different languages. Interpreters and translators enable them to communicate with local populations, negotiate ceasefires, and conduct military operations.

Historical Example:

During the Gulf War, interpreters and translators played a crucial role for U.S. forces. They allowed soldiers to communicate with local populations and gather information about the enemy.

Practical Roles:

Interpreters and translators can assist the military in:

Conducting intelligence operations

Performing patrols

Interrogating prisoners

Negotiating ceasefires

Risks Faced by Interpreters and Translators

The work of interpreters and translators in armed conflicts is often dangerous. They may be targeted by armed groups or hostile populations. They may also be exposed to challenging working conditions, including violence and poverty.

Historical Example:

During the Iraq War, many interpreters were murdered by armed groups, as they were considered collaborators with U.S. forces.

Practical Risks:

The risks faced by interpreters and translators in armed conflicts include:

Hostage-taking

Torture

Assassination

Exposure to violence

Exposure to poverty

For those interested in the profession of war interpreters, I recommend the film “The Covenant” by Guy Ritchie, released in 2023. This film poignantly illustrates the many dangers that war interpreters can face.

Based on real events, the film recounts the story of interpreters who assisted the U.S. military in Afghanistan in 2018. It provides a gripping insight into the challenges these professionals face while emphasizing the human and humanitarian aspect of their commitment.

A recommended film for its authentic and emotional portrayal of interpreters’ lives in a conflict context. “The Covenant” offers a unique perspective on their crucial role and the trials they endure, thereby raising awareness about the often overlooked reality of this profession.

Interpreters and translators are indispensable actors in international conflicts, playing a crucial role for both journalists and the military. Their work is often perilous, yet essential for facilitating communication and understanding among the various stakeholders in conflicts.

This text has been enhanced by incorporating practical facts into each section. These practical facts provide additional insights into the role of interpreters and translators in international conflicts. They also highlight the risks faced by these professionals in such challenging contexts.

As a professional translation agency, Larina Translation is constantly looking for new technologies and tools to improve the quality and speed of its services. The question they ask themselves is: AI or a human interpreter? One of the most exciting and promising technologies in this field is artificial intelligence (AI) CHAT GPT. Using advanced language models and algorithms, AI can help translators work faster and more efficiently while providing more accurate and consistent translations.

AI or a human interpreter ?

AI has revolutionized many industries, including language. Interpreters, who translate conversations in real time, are professionals who are also facing the impact of AI on their profession. AI has the ability to analyze large amounts of data and provide instant translations with a high level of accuracy. This technology has significantly improved the speed and quality of translations and is already used in many contexts, including on online translation platforms.

However, this technology is not yet capable of completely replacing human interpreters. Interpreters play a crucial role in contexts where translation needs to be done with great accuracy and in complex situations, such as international conferences or business negotiations. Human interpreters can understand the nuances of language and idiomatic expressions, as well as the cultural and social contexts that influence conversations. Moreover, interpreters are often versatile professionals capable of translating in multiple languages and in different fields. The linguistic skills and specialized knowledge of interpreters allow them to provide a more accurate and complete translation than what AI can currently offer.

However, can AI be a useful tool for interpreters, allowing them to work more efficiently and faster? Interpreters can use voice recognition software to transcribe conversations quickly, allowing them to focus on translation. Real-time translation technologies can also help interpreters quickly understand the topics discussed during a conversation, which can enable them to provide a more accurate and faster translation.

In summary, the impact of AI on the profession of interpreters is significant but complex. While AI can provide fast and accurate translations, it cannot completely replace human interpreters who possess linguistic skills and specialized knowledge that AI does not yet have. Interpreters can, however, take advantage of AI to improve their work and provide more efficient and faster translation services.

Feel free to comment on this article and let us know what you think about AI and Chat GPT.

Simultaneous interpreters during international meetings.

Good relationships sometimes depend on small things. The level and quality of simultaneous interpreters’ work can influence the exchanges between world leaders in a positive or negative way, with serious consequences.

President Macron and President Putin during the meeting at Fort de Brégançon.

The recent example of the meeting between Vladimir Putin and Emmanuel Macron on August 19, 2019, at Brégançon, illustrates this point. The work of the group of simultaneous interpreters for French media journalists was significantly different from that done by RT France (Russian media) interpreters, an incident noticed by many viewers and Internet users. Fortunately, in this case, the differences in interpretation did not have serious consequences for a good geopolitical relationship. However, some cases can end with very negative consequences.

Article to read: Lost in translation: what did Vladimir Putin really say about the Yellow Vests in Brégançon?

Historically, there have been several cases in our history where simultaneous interpreters and translators have changed the course of events.

L’exemple le plus tragique est malheureusement celui-ci :

The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki could have been avoided, due to a translation error that could have been prevented, following the interpretation of the Japanese term “Mokusatsu” which was translated as “ignore with contempt” but was interpreted in the wrong context. This led to the largest massacre of the 20th century, with the United States dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The reality was simply a confusion and haste of journalists who misinterpreted Kantaro Suzuki’s use of the term “Mokusatsu” to mean “ignore with contempt” instead of “no comment for now,” a term with a double meaning that could be interpreted as “contempt.” We know the rest of the story. Can we say that a reflection should be made regarding the professionalism of interpreters and especially not to mix two professions into one! Journalist and interpreter are not the same profession.

Other examples exist, with less severe consequences in terms of loss of human lives, but still have an impact.

Confusion during the Sudanese referendum in February 2010.

Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary-General of the United Nations,

was reported by AFP as saying “We will work hard to avoid possible secession.” In reality, Ban Ki-moon had told journalists that he was in favor of a unified Sudan, stating, “We will try to work hard to make this unity attractive.” The result was a major incident in Sudan that took some time to dissipate.

The abandonment of Jimmy Carter by the United States?

In 1977, Jimmy Carter, the President of the United States, visited Poland with a Russian interpreter who spoke Polish but lacked professional training in the language! President Carter allegedly claimed that he had “abandoned” the United States for Poland. In reality, he was simply referring to the “aspirations for the future” of the Polish people.

Fortunately, in this particular case, the most serious consequence was the premature departure of the interpreter and some joking by the Poles.

The infamous “We will bury you”

Another approximate translation during the Cold War. In 1956, the Prime Minister of the Soviet Union, Nikita Khrushchev, had an expression distorted: It should have been “we will outlast you” or “we will defeat you,” which is the correct translation, but it turned into “we will bury you”… It must be admitted that, given the context, this could quickly escalate. Once again, the responsibility of the interpreter was heavily involved.

Many other cases exist, and the question arises when technology thinks it can replace the interpreter. Is this a good idea given the responsibilities involved and the possible consequences?

An Italian expression perfectly illustrates the subject “Traduttore, traditore,” which literally means “translator, traitor” and proves that in international politics, the exercise is really delicate and even dangerous.

In conclusion, it is up to you to decide whether the interpreter is a traitor or not!
